Donelson Caffery was born near Franklin, La., on September 10, 1835, and served as a lieutenant in the 13th Louisiana Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He married Bethia Richardson in 1869. He was a planter in St. Mary Parish, La., state senator for St. Mary Parish (1892-1894), and U.S. senator from Louisiana (1893-1901). He died in New Orleans, La., on December 30, 1906.
